The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations. Graham Spanier was born July 18, 1948 in Cape Town, South Africa, where his father had escaped from Nazi Germany. He grew up on the south side of Chicago, graduated from Iowa State University (B. A., sociology with minor in psychology and mathematics, 1969; M.A. sociology, 1971) and Northwestern University (Ph.D., sociology,1973).
